After almost 30 years, I am finally admitting that I talk to myself. Out loud, in my car, and at the grocery store, I move my lips and tongue as if fully immersed in a conversation with a wall. Growing up as an only child, I had lots of practice. I’ve gotten to know myself pretty well, and I’ve found that I give great advice. I’m not always the best listener, but I’ll talk to myself about that another time.
We all do it – perhaps not so outwardly. Our consciences move us towards decisions and opinions, but do we listen? Should we trust our own minds? That depends on who you’re asking.
Talking to Myself is a collection of essays on personal doubts, grief, and all the bad decisions we should talk ourselves out of. These essays explore feelings of comfort, discomfort, and the balancing act of comforting the discomfort. This is a diary filled with tales of love, grief, and desires to be heard that I’ve left out on my pillow for all to read. I’m getting bored hearing myself all the time. Care to listen?
