When was the last time you visited the local library? As kids, it may seem more frequent or even required, but there’s no age restrictions for a library card. As purchasing e-books and print books becomes more expensive and your bookshelves have become more extensive, libraries are the perfect spot for checking out your next favorite read.
But libraries aren’t just for checking out books, you know. If your library card has gone missing or you’re finally ready to mark that off your to-do list, here are some extra reasons to support your local library!
Community
Of course, libraries are a popular haven for bookworms, but anyone can use the library to get together as a group. Most libraries hold events for those interested in many hobbies besides reading such as knitting, gardening, playing chess, or pretty much everything else!
The physical building can be a haven as well. During natural events, individuals can seek shelter and safety from disaster at the public library. Following Hurricane Sandy in 2012, libraries in New York and New Jersey were filled with locals looking for internet access to connect with loved ones and stay updated on the news.
Literacy and Education
Learning doesn’t stop once we leave school. It should also be encouraged throughout our lives outside of school, and libraries are the best place to be for this! Libraries are spaces where parents can monitor and support their children’s literacy development, and hopefully find some good stories for bedtime.

If there’s information you can’t find or can’t wrap your brain around, your librarian will be able to help. Librarians will be able to help you find extra resources and information to aid you in your search. They should have a dictionary on hand – in case you forget how to spell that one word.
Economic Sustainability
With all the great resources to be found at the library – and most at no cost – libraries will remain staples in our society for years to come. Public libraries’ budgets are limited to purchasing materials that are meant to be shared by everyone. Even with the advancement of technology, libraries have kept up to speed by offering affordable access to Wi-Fi, printers, DVDs, CDs, and e-books.

If you’re free next Sunday, dust off your library card (or talk to your librarian about signing up for one) and support your local library!
